B.C. teacher charged for sexual relationship with student banned from teaching

More than three years after a B.C. teacher entered a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student, a lifetime ban on teaching was handed down.

In a Sept. 24 summary report from the British Columbia Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, an unnamed teacher agreed that they would never again apply for a certificate of qualification, an independent school teaching certificate or a letter of permission, the issuing of which is barred under the Teacher’s Act.

The teacher received a 15-month conditional sentence on March 28, 2019 with two years’ probation for one count of sexual exploitation of a person under the age of 18. The teacher is registered on the National Sex Offender registry for 10 years.

In 2016, the teacher was photographed partying and drinking alcohol with students. The teacher also began a sexual relationship with a student.

The teacher resigned in November 2016.

Names of the teacher and School District were withheld by the teacher regulation branch to protect the identity of the student.
