B.C. senior robbed after helping couple with cash and a ride

Police in Quesnel have arrested a couple who robbed an elderly woman after she gave them $20 for food and a ride.

According to a Quesnel RCMP media release, the couple stole the elderly woman's purse when they left her care after she'd given them a lift.

On Dec. 8 at roughly 5:45 p.m. the couple had come to the woman's aid when they saw her having difficulties making a deposit at a bank ATM in Quesnel. The couple helped the elderly woman with the deposit and then walked her back to her car.

The couple then told her they hadn't eaten for a while, and they also asked for a ride down the street as the weather was bad. The RCMP said in "true Christmas spirit" she woman gave them $20 and a ride.

However, when the couple were getting out of the woman's vehicle they snatched her purse.

They promptly withdrew $400 from her bank account from an ATM and tried for another transaction at a different ATM but were unsuccessful. Police believe the couple watched the woman enter her PIN number when they were helped her at the bank.

Luckily, the RCMP identified the couple with video surveillance and they were both arrested Dec. 14. Police found several items and financial cards belonging to the woman on the couple when they were arrested.

The RCMP have not released their names but say a 41-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman are now facing charges of theft, possession of stolen property, and fraud. They are due to appear in court Feb. 23, 2021.
