B.C. is taking the day off for the Queen's funeral.
Public employees across the province won't be working on Monday, Sept. 19, following an earlier announcement that federal employees will take a national holiday.
That includes public schools, public post-secondary institutions and "most Crown corporations" will be closed to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
"Over the last few days, British Columbians have joined with people across the country and around the world in an outpouring of support for the Royal Family over the loss of Queen Elizabeth II," Premier John Horgan said in a news release. "This will be a national day to reflect on the incredible life of Canada's Queen and the longest-serving monarch in British history."
Horgan said private businesses are not affected by the public holiday.
"We encourage private-sector employers to find a way to recognize or reflect on the day in a way that is appropriate for their employees," he said.
Some Kelowna, Kamloops and Penticton city employees will also get the day off.
Penticton city hall, city yards, the public library and Penticton Museum and Archives will be closed on Sept. 19.
In Kamloops, "most" non-essential city services will be closed for the day, according to a news release.
While it doesn't specify what will be closed, the city will continue garbage collection and keep its fitness facilities open.
Vernon hasn't yet said whether their employees will be observing the one-time holiday.
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador said they would observe the national day of mourning, but they also said it won't affect private-sector employers.
Ontario and Quebec won't be observing the day of mourning.
