“It looks like we’re at our peak of hospitalizations.”

That from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry during a media briefing today, Feb. 1.

Dr. Henry presented a chart showing a drop-off of both cases and hospitalizations during the briefing, and the numbers released today reflect that trend with 1,026 people currently in hospital with a positive COVID diagnosis.

That’s down from the record high 1,048 yesterday.

The green line shows the number of new COVID cases recorded in B.C. since Jan. 1, 2021. The blue line is hospitalizations and the red is deaths.

The number of people in intensive care with a COVID diagnosis is up by one to 139, according to a Ministry of Health media release.

Dr. Henry also showed charts that indicated as many as 65% of those in hospital with a COVID diagnosis were not in hospital because of COVID but were tested after going to hospital for things like surgery, delivering a baby or being admitted to a mental health unit.

There were 1,236 positive cases of COVID recorded in B.C. in the last 24 hours.

There were 406 new cases recorded in the Interior Health region, 252 in Fraser Health, 212 in Vancouver Coastal, 181 on Vancouver Island and 171 in the Northern Health region.

Since most B.C. residents with COVID are told they don’t need to get tested or may take a rapid test, the actual number of cases is likely three to four times higher, health officials have said.

Nine more people, all in the Fraser Health region, died of COVID in the last 24 hours, bringing the pandemic total to 2,625.

There are 28,302 active cases in B.C.

The vaccination rate for people over the age of 12 remained unchanged at 92.7% with at least one dose as did the 90.1% for those with at least two doses. The number of people with three doses increased to 46.4%.
