A BC dog breeder was fined after leaving a French bulldog so neglected a veterinarian advised it be put down.
The veterinarian reported the emaciated, dehydrated and hypothermic dog named Java in January 2023, which led to her conviction this week, according to a BC SPCA news release.
Simona Pringle from Nanaimo took Java to get checked after it had multiple seizures over five days. The veterinarian found the dog was in critical distress and Pringle had denied supportive care or euthanasia, according to the release.
She took Java to be euthanized once a BC SPCA animal protection officer intervened.
The investigator found she had put the dog in distress, violating animal cruelty laws.
BC SPCA said Pringle was convicted on Nov. 26, and was given a $1,000 fine and 40 hours of community service. She's also barred from owning more than three dogs for the next year, and they must be spayed or neutered.
“This is a clear reminder to anyone responsible for an animal that you have a legal and ethical duty to ensure the animal is not in distress and to protect that animal from any circumstances that are likely to cause distress,” Eileen Drever of BC SPCA said in the release.
“It is also an important reminder for anyone looking to add a puppy to their home to ensure that they are dealing with responsible breeders.”
