B.C. couple wins big with $20 million lottery jackpot

Lotto winners Susan and Ken Salter pose for a photograph at the BCLC office in Kamloops on Friday, Nov. 8, 2019.

A Telkwa, B.C. couple are celebrating a $20 million Lotto Max win.

Ken Salter says he has been regularly trying his luck with Lotto Max and a slight change in his playing habits left him millions of dollars richer.

Salter normally plays on Fridays, but when he won $20 on his usual play, he decided to try out a Tuesday draw.

When Ken found out he and his wife Susan had won $20 million dollars, he says he was “shaking like a leaf" and was in total shock.

“I overheard the store clerk talking about a $20 million winner in the Stikine region,” Salter says in a BCLC media release. “I came up to her and said, ‘You might want to scan this ticket’ with a grin on my face.”

Salter called Susan right away to tell her the good news.

“At first there was nothing but dead silence, so I thought something was wrong,” Susan says in the release. “But then he whispered really quietly, ‘We just won $20 million dollars,’ and I thought he was joking.”

"We will wait for the storm to settle down a little bit for the first month then we'll come home and live our lives and hopefully we will have a couple new trucks in the yard," Ken says.

The couple plan on building their dream home, including a ranch, in their hometown to Telkwa and want to take a river cruise in Europe.

"(Susan) has always wanted an island in the kitchen, there is going to be game room... a couple guest rooms," he says.

The couple has been married for nearly 30 years and never thought they would be lottery winners.

"You never really believe you're going to win and then when it happens, it's just unbelievable," Susan says.
