NEW YORK, N.Y. - Andy Pettitte broke his ankle on the same day the Yankees put CC Sabathia on the disabled list, but Robinson Cano hit a go-ahead homer to help New York beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 Wednesday for a three-game sweep.

The AL East leaders face at least two starts without Sabathia and at least six weeks without Pettitte, the 40-year-old veteran who came out of retirement and had filled in admirably for a pitching staff hit hard by injuries — including the loss of starter Michael Pineda and closer Mariano Rivera.

Pettitte fractured his fibula near his left ankle in the fifth inning when he was hit by Casey Kotchman's line drive. Before the game, the Yankees announced Sabathia strained his groin against the Mets on Sunday night and still felt discomfort after throwing in the bullpen Tuesday.

Rafael Soriano had an adventuresome ninth inning in which put the first two batters on base and walked in a run with two outs before getting Asdrubal Cabrera to fly out for his 17th save in 18 chances.

Freddy Garcia (2-2) tossed 2 1-3 hitless innings.

Ubaldo Jimenez (7-6) gave up four runs in six innings while striking out seven. The Indians have lost a season-high five straight.

RANGERS 13, TIGERS 9

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — David Murphy went 4 for 5 with two home runs and matched his career high with five RBIs for Texas and starter Roy Oswalt.

Ian Kinsler added a two-run homer and Adrian Beltre had three hits and an RBI in support of Oswalt, who earned his second victory in two starts with the Rangers, who had 16 hits.

Oswalt (2-0) went six innings, giving up five runs and a career-high 13 hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Jhonny Peralta was 3 for 4 with a two-run double in the fifth inning for the Tigers, who twice fought back from big deficits, including scoring four runs in the eighth.

Doug Fister (1-5) hasn't won on the road in six starts this season.

Every Ranger had a hit or scored except Josh Hamilton, who went 0 for 4 and struck out four times.

WHITE SOX 12, TWINS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Chris Sale pitched seven easy innings and Adam Dunn hit a three-run homer to lead Chicago past Minnesota.

Sale (9-2) allowed two runs and six hits while striking out five and walking one. He was leading the league with a 2.27 ERA.

Dunn had three hits and four RBIs along with his 24th home run of the season, and newly acquired Kevin Youkilis went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs. Alex Rios also had three hits and a homer, and the White Sox collected a season-high 21 hits.

Nick Blackburn (4-5) watched his ERA balloon to 7.74 after five rough innings for the Twins. He gave up nine hits and six runs.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura gave regulars Paul Konerko, Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo a rest, but an offence that managed only 13 runs over the previous five games finally had a breakout game.

ANGELS 13, ORIOLES 1

BALTIMORE (AP) — Torii Hunter homered and scored four runs, Jered Weaver pitched into the seventh inning and Los Angeles beat Baltimore for a two-game sweep.

One night after reaching season highs in homers and hits, the Angels set a season mark for runs in their most lopsided victory of 2012. Los Angeles totalled 20 runs and 33 hits during its sixth straight series win.

Kendrys Morales had three hits and four RBIs, and Mike Trout had four hits and scored three runs for the Angels, who have won 13 of their last 17 games overall and 13 of 14 on the road. Alberto Callaspo had two hits in a six-run fourth that made it 9-1.

Making his second start since spending three weeks on the disabled list with a lower back strain, Weaver (8-1) scattered six hits over 6 2-3 innings to lower his ERA to 2.31.

Orioles starter Jason Hammel (8-3) began the game with a streak of 19 straight innings without allowing an earned run, but he never made it to 20. The right-hander gave up eight runs and eight hits in 3 1-3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. His ERA ballooned from 2.61 to 3.29.

Wilson Betemit had three hits for the Orioles, who have lost six of eight. Baltimore has scored only 12 runs during that slide.

RED SOX 10, BLUE JAYS 4

BOSTON (AP) — David Ortiz hit his 399th homer and Boston scored six runs in the first inning against a wild Ricky Romero to beat Toronto for its fifth straight series win.

Adrian Gonzalez had three RBIs and Mike Aviles added two as the Red Sox improved to 9-2 in their last 11 games.

Jon Lester (5-5) allowed a run-scoring single to Colby Rasmus in the first, but the Red Sox scored all the runs they needed in the bottom half as Romero (8-2) threw 16 balls on his first 19 pitches.

Boston went ahead 7-1 in the second when Ortiz and Cody Ross walked and Gonzalez hit an RBI single.

Jose Bautista hit his major league-leading 25th homer for the Blue Jays.

ROYALS 5, RAYS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Billy Butler greeted reliever Burke Badenhop with a solo home run in the eighth inning, powering Kansas City to a three-game sweep of Tampa Bay on a scorching afternoon.

Mike Moustakas and Alcides Escobar also homered for the Royals, who completed their first three-game sweep of the Rays at home since 2001.

Aaron Crow (1-1), the fifth Royals pitcher, got two outs in the eighth.

Tampa Bay tied it at 4 in the eighth on a two-run triple by Ben Zobrist, who had three hits and three RBIs. He also made three outs on the bases, getting thrown out twice at home plate trying to score on grounders.

Jonathan Broxton pitched the ninth for his 19th save in 22 opportunities.

Badenhop (1-2) managed only one out after starter Matt Moore laboured through 7 1-3 innings.

ATHLETICS 2, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) — Jarrod Parker struck out a career-high nine in seven innings and Oakland's only two hits in a victory over Seattle were homers by Yoenis Cespedes and Coco Crisp.

Parker (4-3) allowed three hits and walked four. He has given up two earned runs in his last 20 innings, going 2-0 in those three outings and lowering his ERA to 2.57.

Ryan Cook pitched around an error and a walk in the ninth for his sixth save. He struck out Ichiro Suzuki with two on to end it.

Hisashi Iwakuma (1-1) took the loss. Mariners starter Kevin Millwood left after 2 2-3 innings when he strained his right groin again.
