A Vernon couple is making SilverStar Mountain Resort skiers and snowboarders happy with their giant yellow Simpsons costumes.

Brian and Sandy Gerow recently moved to Vernon from Saskatchewan but have been donning Bart and Lisa Simpson costumes for the last 10 years and snowboarding at slopes in B.C.

“We’ve had to get our picture taken with the lifties and a few of the people on the hill. We’ve also made a point of having chocolates in our pockets and most days when we ski we give the lifties a chocolate,” Sandy said.

They’ve also been handing out chocolates to children.

“We just like to have fun,” she said.

It started when friends of theirs wore a bear suit at the Kimberley Alpine Resort and would hide in a cave to scare the kids, Brian said. He had a Bart Simpson stuffie and decided he wanted a costume made.

A few years later, Sandy had a Lisa suit made and they began dressing up for Valentine’s Day and handing out chocolate to the kids. That expanded to the lift operators.

The pair have been snowboarding since it was invented, Brian laughed.

“We’re young at heart,” he said. “Our son said ‘I wonder how many people think there are two 66-year-olds under the suits.’”

After having so much fun on the hill today, Jan. 23, the pair will be heading out again on Feb. 5 or 6 and will be around for the season.

“It makes every else’s day,” Brian said.

They’ve started to become recognized around the resort, Sandy said.
