TORONTO - The mother of a five-year-old boy who was starved to death by his grandparents is due back on the stand today at the Toronto inquest into his death.
Yvonne Kidman testified yesterday that her mother, Elva Bottineau, wanted custody of Jeffrey Baldwin and his siblings because she lived in social housing and without them she could lose her home.
Kidman testified Bottineau was constantly threatening to take her four children away — and finally got them after they were apprehended by the Catholic Children's Aid Society.
Jeffrey weighed a mere 21 pounds when he died just before his sixth birthday.
It wasn't until after his death that the children's aid society discovered in their own records that Bottineau and Norman Kidman had been convicted of abusing her children from a previous relationship.
Bottineau and Kidman were ultimately convicted of second-degree murder in Jeffrey's death and are serving life sentences.
