A ten-week-old kitten is fighting to stay alive after it was found badly injured on the shore of Dragon Lake in Quesnel and taken into the care of the BC SPCA.

“The finder was looking out of her bedroom window when she spotted what she thought was a kitten,” Colby O’Flynn with the SPCA said in a media release today, Aug.14. “Her husband went to check it out and Tilly crawled under their boat dock. They managed to coax her out onto the deck with some food – she desperately wanted to eat.”

The kitten’s eyes were glazed and it had insects all over it, and there was a visible wound on its back. The people who found the kitten wrapped it in a blanket, put it in a pet carrier and brought it to the Quesnel shelter.

“When Tilly arrived at the animal centre, the first thing we noticed, even before we brought her out of the carrier, was the smell of infection,” O’Flynn said. “She was cold, pale, dehydrated and barely able to lift her little head. It was hard to see the extent of the damage through her black fur, but we knew this kitten didn't have much longer without emergency veterinary intervention.”

The kitten spent days in the care of a veterinarian receiving pain control, antibiotics, wound care and fluids. The wound on her back, believed to be from a predator, was cleaned and dead tissue removed. After inflammation and infection were managed, tubes were installed to allow drainage and promote healing. Tilly’s tail was badly injured.

The kitten’s prognosis went from day-by-day to a full recovery, O’Flynn said.

“Tilly was tiny, terrified and weak, yet she somehow managed to pick herself up and find help,” he said. “Right now, she is on medication to make her comfortable, so we have not had the chance to see her fun and playful side yet, but we have all fallen in love with the affectionate little love-bug.”

Tilly will eventually be spayed and her tail amputated, and is expected to be available for adoption in September.
