Backpack with loaded handgun found in Kamloops front yard

FILE PHOTO

Kamloops RCMP was called this weekend when someone found a handgun inside a backpack on someone's Brocklehurst front yard.

Police say the person found a "suspected" handgun on the 2500 block of Tranquille Road on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.

It was loaded with more ammunition in the bag.

Police were called just before 1 p.m., and the detachment's forensic team is now investigating the gun and bag.

Whether police attended the scene or have seized the gun isn't clear. Police referred to the handgun as a "suspected" firearm.

When asked whether police confirmed it was a firearm, whether it was modified and what calibre it is, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said all that information is "part of the ongoing investigation."

Anyone with information or video surveillance to help determine how the bag ended up on the front lawn can contact Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000.
