Baby in Barriere died of cardiac arrest after delayed ambulance response

Baby in Barriere died of cardiac arrest after delayed ambulance response on Aug. 25, 2022.

A baby in Barriere died of a cardiac arrest after a delayed ambulance response in Barriere last week.

“It’s heartbreaking to hear reports that an ambulance and paramedics were not immediately available in someone’s time of need,” said president of Ambulance Paramedics B.C. Troy Clifford in an emailed statement.

“This is easily one of the worst situations anyone can imagine.”

Ambulance Paramedics B.C. will continue to address the province-wide staffing crisis, including communities like Barriere that are often left without appropriate ambulance coverage for long periods of time due to staffing issues.

Out of respect for the affected family, the community and their affected members they are not making more public comments but are passing matters to BC Emergency Health Services.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and the community at this heartbreaking loss,” said BC Emergency Health Services in an email.

“We can confirm BCEHS did receive a call to respond to a patient at a residence in Barriere on Thursday August 25. The closest available ambulance was immediately dispatched, and local firefighters were requested to assist.”

BC Emergency Health Services has opened a review and will be working with the Patient Care Quality Office to reach out to the family and answer their questions and concerns.
