Attempted boat theft in Kelowna leads to arrests

Three people were taken under arrest after attempting to steal a large fibreglass boat on a trailer from a Kelowna residence yesterday morning.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. yesterday, Nov. 6, police received a report that a boat was stolen from a home in the Upper Mission area of Kelowna at approximately 2:15 a.m., according to an RCMP media release.

A white Ford pickup truck was seen on CCTV footage leaving the residence pulling the large fibreglass boat and trailer.

Just after noon that same day, a patrolling officer saw the suspect vehicle still pulling the boat in the Lower Mission and conducted a traffic stop on the 3100 block of Casorso Road.

The driver and one passenger were taken into custody while a second passenger fled on foot and arrested shortly afterwards in a commercial parking lot nearby. During the arrests police seized drugs and a firearm.

“CCTV footage from a private residence significantly supported this investigation and assisted our frontline officers in recovering the stolen vessel within hours," Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Michael Gauthier said in the release.

The driver and the passenger have been released and are to appear in court at a later date while the passenger who fled remains in custody for outstanding warrants. Once completed, the results of the investigation will be forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service with recommended charges against all parties.
