TORONTO - Jurors at the Ashley Smith prison-death inquest are slated to return their verdict today.

They are also expected to make numerous recommendations on dealing with mentally ill inmates.

Smith, 19, of Moncton, N.B., choked herself to death six years ago.

Guards at the prison in Kitchener, Ont., were under orders against rushing into her segregation cell, so they videotaped but did not intervene in time.

The five women jurors heard extensive evidence on the teen's treatment in federal custody.

They also heard how poorly equipped the prison system was to deal with the mentally ill teen.
