Kyrgyz authorities arrest opposition activist

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - Kyrgyzstan's security agency has arrested an opposition activist as part of a probe into the alleged plot to overthrow the government.

The National Security Committee said Wednesday that Alexander Gusev was arrested after threatening agents who came to search his house. The move follows the arrest last week of three other activists of the People's Parliament, an opposition group, including leader Bekbolot Talgarbekov.

The group organized a gathering last week calling for a change of government in the impoverished ex-Soviet Central Asian nation amid the worsening economic situation. Its members planned to hold a big rally in the capital, Bishkek, on Tuesday, but it didn't take place.

Since it became independent in 1991 amid the Soviet collapse, Kyrgyzstan has seen the violent ouster of two of its presidents.
