NEW DELHI - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says Rahul Gandhi is the best candidate to be the next prime minister.

Singh spoke Friday in what was only his third news conference in 10 years. The speech comes at a time when the stock of his ruling Congress Party is low. India's main Hindu nationalist party trounced Congress in recent state elections that could offer a sign of what's to come in this year's general election.

On Friday, Singh said Rahul Gandhi has the best credentials to lead the Congress Party. Gandhi is heir to India's Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty. He has been widely expected to lead the Congress Party in the campaign.

Singh is 81 and not expected to seek another term.
