Sotheby's to auction group of Canadian artworks estimated up to $11 million

TORONTO - A painting by influential Ontario artist Tom Thomson headlines a collection of Canadian art set to go to auction by Sotheby's Canada next month.
Thomson's depiction of wintertime in Algonquin park, estimated at $750,000 to $1 million, has the highest estimated value of a group of works that amount to a combined pre-auction estimate of $8 million to $11 million.
Emily Carr's "Canal in Brittany" and "Woman Knitting" — both tracking back to her 1910-11 trip to France — are both estimated to sell as high as $175,000.
Meanwhile, works from Marc-Aurele Fortin ("View of Montreal from St. Helen's Island") and Clarence Alphonse Gagnon ("St. Malo from the Cliffs of Saint-Briac") are expected to fetch between $400,000 and $600,000, while Jean-Paul Lemieux's "Equinoxe D'Automne" has an expected pricetag in the range of $250,000-$400,000.
Other artists to be represented in the sale include A.Y. Jackson, James Duncan, Cornelius Krieghoff, Maurice Cullen and Marcelle Ferron.
The auction will be held Nov. 27, with the works being made available for preview at exhibitions in Montreal and Toronto in the days leading up.
"We are very proud to present a comprehensive collection of works for sale this November representing the best of Canadian art," Sotheby's Canada president David Silcox said in a statement.
"We are pleased to offer a particularly strong group of historical works, with works by every member of the Group of Seven, among other luminaries of Canadian art."
