TORONTO - Vancouver's Stan Douglas has won this year's $50,000 Scotiabank Photography Award.
The honour, announced Thursday night in Toronto, also comes with a primary exhibition at next year's Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival as well as a book of his work published and distributed by Steidl of Germany.
Douglas has created films, photographs and installations that re-examine particular locations or past events.
He beat out two other Canadian photographers for the prize — Angela Grauerholz and Robert Walker, who each received $5,000 as finalists.
This is the third year for the photography award, which was also founded by Jane Nokes, Scotiabank's director of Archives, Corporate Records and Fine Art.
This year's jury members were William Ewing, Karen Love, and Ann Thomas.
Previous winners of include Lynne Cohen and the late Arnaud Maggs.
"Stan Douglas has helped define and enrich the Canadian art and photography landscape with his outstanding artwork," Edward Burtynksy, chair of this year's jury and co-founder of the award, said in a statement.
"He has pushed the limits of contemporary photography and will continue to have an incredible impact on the world of photography both here in Canada and abroad."
