A man has been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed the Bankhead Convenience Store in Kelowna this past weekend.

According to a Kelowna RCMP media release issued today, June 6, the fire at the Bernard Avenue convenience store is being investigated as an arson.

"This incident was not random in nature and we do not believe there is risk to other members of the public or businesses from the individual who was arrested," Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Corp. Michael Gauthier said in the release. "An extensive risk assessment is always conducted before someone is released from custody and appropriate conditions have been put in place."

No individuals were hurt in the fire which was discovered at roughly 5:30 a.m. June 4, but the flames gutted the building.

Police say the suspect was released June 5, and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 9.

The RCMP is asking the public for any video evidence of foot traffic in the areas of Bernard Avenue, Burtch Road and the Parkinson Recreation Centre between the hours of 4 a.m. and 6 a.m, June 4.

Anyone with any information should contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 and reference Kelowna RCMP File #2023-30917. Or stay anonymous and call Central Okanagan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leave a tip online at www.crimestopper.net.
