UPDATE: Suspect in custody following armed standoff on Westside Road: Vernon RCMP

May 18, 2021 - 1:59 PM

RCMP have a suspect in custody following an armed standoff on Westside Road near Vernon today.

Police say in a media release this afternoon, May 18, one person has been taken into custody.

Officers were called to an incident involving a firearm around 7:30 a.m. at the home on Westside Road. RCMP do not say where on Westside Road the standoff happened.

A perimeter was established around the residence. RCMP dog services were on the scene along with the heavily armed officers from the Southeast District Emergency Response Team.

RCMP were asking the public to avoid the area. They were also asking anyone in the area not to share the location or activities of police on social media, as such action could jeopardize safety.

Officers are expected to remain on scene for several more hours as they continue to collect evidence, RCMP said.

"There is no risk to the public and we would like to thank all those who were impacted as we worked to safely resolve this event," Vernon North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski said in the release.
