Staffers at the Village of Keremeos office were threatened and assaulted by a man brandishing a sledge hammer and a knife yesterday.

Keremeos RCMP were called to the village office at around 10:50 a.m. yesterday, Jan. 24, after witnesses reported a man in his 40s threatening staff with the weapons, according to an RCMP press release.

The man damaged property and physically assaulted village workers while inside. As employees were escaping from the building, he followed them outside and kept yelling at them, assaulting them and continued his aggressive behaviour.

Once police arrived, the suspect assaulted an officer and struggled while he resisted arrest. However police eventually managed to arrest him.

In an emailed statement, RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Vatamaniuck said the injuries were relatively minor and no immediate care was required, however "some victims were encouraged to go to the hospital to ensure the injuries weren’t extensive."

The sledgehammer and knife were not involved in any of the assaults, Vatamaniuck said.

Cameron Urquhart, 41, is facing a number of criminal charges. RCMP did not say specifically what those charges are.

RCMP said they don't think Urquhart was working with anyone else and they don't believe the attack was orchestrated or endorsed by any type of protest to current events.

Anyone with any additional information to this incident are asked to contact the Keremeos RCMP at 250-499-5511.
