Armed man shot by Kelowna police officer at homeless camp, police say

KELOWNA – A Kelowna RCMP officer shot and seriously injured a man at a homeless camp on Duck Lake Road today, police say.

The man who was shot produced a knife, B.C. RCMP said In a release today.

“The officers engaged a male camper, who is alleged to have produced a knife, and approached the officers,” the release says. “Efforts were made to de-escalate the situation. Ultimately the Kelowna RCMP Officer was unable to resolve the situation and is alleged to have discharged their firearm, striking the male.”

Police were called to the homeless camp today, Aug. 3 around 12:30 p.m. to assist a Kelowna Bylaw officer.

The man has been arrested and transported to a local area hospital for treatment of serious injuries. There were no other injuries but the Independent Investigations Office routinely investigates all officer involved shootings.

“The scene and any evidence have been secured while the Independent Investigation Office of B.C. have been notified and are deploying to the scene. IIO BC will assume conduct of this investigation as they work to determine if there is a connection to the actions of police and the injuries sustained by the male,” the release says.

Witnesses of this incident are asked to call the independent investigations office at 1-855-446-8477.
