The Okanagan’s premier motorsports club has a new way for gearheads and racing enthusiasts to put their pedal to the metal on a professionally-designed racetrack.

For $995, Area 27 is offering a high performance driving package that includes some time behind the wheel of a 2021 Camaro V8 SS 1LE, followed by an afternoon on the track’s karting facility.

The Area 27 "Motorsports Mixer Package" gets you on the full Area 27 circuit with lead-follow sessions followed by three timed-karting sessions.

Area 27 is 4.3 km, world-class racing circuit, located five minutes east of Oliver, about 30 minutes’ drive from Penticton.

Area 27 President Bill Drossos says the track was looking for a way to provide a racing experience for residents.

“We’ve always had a public participation component with our driving academy, but the driving academy is a two-and-a-half-day course, and it’s a big commitment,” he says.

With COVID-19 issues last year, Drossos says they had to find other ideas.

“People can’t travel, so they were looking for things to do here in the Okanagan,” he says, adding the package has been set up for social distancing. “We decided to create a package that’s a little more affordable, but still gives a taste of what the Camaro academy could be like. It's also an opportunity to check out the karting track. It gives people a sample of what the track offers. Then they can make the decision as to whether they want to do the full Camaro academy, or buy a kart and go karting."

The package involves about 6 and a half hours of activity, and lunch in the track restaurant. Participants are assigned their own table and the vehicles are equipped with radios.

Motorsport Mixer costs $995 plus GST. Registration takes place from 8:30 to 9:00 a.m., with the Camaro program running from 9 to noon. Karting follows lunch from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Motorsports Mixer dates still available include April 24, May 5, July 7 and Aug. 25.

To register, go to the Area 27 motorsports mixer website.
