Arden Tile Taking Decking to Next Level with 2cm tile and the Buzon Pedestal System

This is deck season, Dennis Huizinga declared, as he showed off the latest and greatest technology for exterior decking.

Calling it the Cadillac model on the market, Dennis detailed how the Buzon pedestal system works and why it is best suited for the Okanagan.

“In our Okanagan climate — where you have a lot of freeze-thaw activity, 40-degree sun in the summer, minus-20 in the winter — traditional tile decks, if not done totally properly, can fail,” said Dennis, who is the proud owner of Arden Tile in Vernon. “They have come up with a great alternative where you still get a tile-looking deck, which a lot of people still like. There are two components — a 2cm thick tile and a pedestal that suspends it over your deck base. It is groutless, it’s not prone to freeze-thaw, and it looks clean and neat.

“It is a pretty slick system, and as far as the pricing goes, it ranges near what the cost of a tile deck system would be.”

Dennis is sold on Buzon being the industry leader and recommends their products to his company’s clients. It was one of the first pedestal systems and was designed to hold the weight of a car. Buzon is Belgian made and has not compromised on its high quality.

“No one wants to tip-toe on their deck,” said Dennis. “The Buzon pedestal design ensures that the tile stay level and don’t flex as you walk on them.”

Dennis says it is catching on and starting to become a popular choice over conventional vinyl and concrete finishes.

“It is an up-and-coming trend,” he said. “A lot of the new builds ... the higher-end builds are almost all going with this type of a thing.

“It is emerging and we’re trying to offer a quality product,” he added, noting Arden Tile has been promoting and stocking Buzon and the 2cm tile products for about two years. They also have qualified installers with experience behind them.

However, the Buzon pedestals are easy to work with.

“With a strong back and a little bit of coaching, it can be a do-it-yourself project,” said Dennis.

While relatively new, at least to North America, the versatility of Buzon products is another selling feature. Ideal for new decks, Buzon’s pedestal system also works well for replacement and reclamation projects. It can be installed over existing patios and concrete slabs, and you can use less expensive concrete pavers as well.

“This system can be lifted and re-installed if necessary,” said Dennis. “They can be placed exactly as they were originally installed, or moved to your new home if you wish.”

That versatility also applies to the tile options and possibilities, which are seemingly endless nowadays.

“Any outdoor 2cm porcelain tile works, and there are a lot of companies that make those now — some better than others,” Dennis said with a laugh.

“The way it works is you have adjustable pedestals. You install them on a torch-on, waterproof membrane and the 2cm thick tile sits on top of them. Each pedestal divides the four corners of the tile in a 2mm or 3mm groutless joint,” Dennis explained while demonstrating on his desk for the full effect. “They spin easy now, but the minute you put pressure on it, they can’t move. …

“There are some cheaper knock-offs on the market, but with this system they built each pod to hit the certain height, so there are no moving parts and no pieces that can break. This is solid.”
