KAMLOOPS - A wildfire sparked 40 kilometres west of Kamloops near Savona is being held, according to B.C. Wildfire.

Last night, May 28, the B.C. Wildfire Service said responded to a roughly 100-hectare grass fire beside the Trans Canada Highway near Savona. The fire was highly visible and growing rapidly last night.

The latest estimate measures the fire at roughly 150 hectares and fire information officer Marla Catherall says they are not anticipating any more growth.

“Last night we had eight firefighters on scene and today we have three,” Catherall says, adding the location of the Deadman River and Trans Canada highway around the wildfire has acted as a natural fuel break to prevent the fire from further spreading.

No structures have been threatened.

This comes as crews continue to try and get a hold of the Allie Lake wildfire, which is burning northwest of Kamloops. The wildfire is roughly 2,700 hectares in size.

Heather Rice with the B.C. Wildfire Service says they are expecting cooler temperatures and rain today, May 29, which will help keep the wildfire steady.

"As long as winds continue to keep low we are seeing good sucess," Rice says. Crews have been making good progress for the past 24 hours, and the fire is now 35 per cent contained.
