While a Sexual Assault Review Team, based out of the RCMP’s national office, has completed its look into unfounded sexual assault cases in Kelowna, that report is now undergoing its own review by the local RCMP.

Statistics Canada released updated information in October 2019 about sexual assault cases across the country. It showed the proportion of sexual assault complaints filed with Kelowna RCMP that were ruled as unfounded in 2018 was about 36 per cent versus a provincial average of 15 per cent and a national average of 14 per cent.

The B.C. RCMP conducted in initial review of the files before calling in the national team in November 2019. The national team reviewed complaints filed in 2018 and 2019.

“The Sexual Assault Review Team has completed their review and forwarded their results and recommendations to Kelowna Detachment,” Kelowna RCMP Const. Solana Pare said in an email to iNFOnews.ca. “The Kelowna detachment is currently looking over the findings and will provide a public update soon.”

The term unfounded indicates the investigating officer did not believe a crime was attempted or occurred and it has disappeared from the public record.

In 2018, 30 or 82 reports of sexual assault were dismissed by members of the Kelowna detachment.
