A BC nurse has been suspended for two weeks for snooping on the medical records of a family member.

According to May 2 BC College of Nurses and Midwives decision, registered nurse Mahsa Rahimi accessed the confidential medical records of a family member for "improper purposes."

The Coquitlam nurse accessed the private records between December 2021 and February 2022. College records show she currently works at the Eagle Ridge Hospital in Port Moody.

No other details are given in the decision of what precisely took place.

Rahimi is the third BC nurse to have been suspended for snooping on confidential medical records this year.

In March, a West Kelowna nurse accessed confidential medical records and then sent the person harassing text messages. She was suspended for 10 weeks.

In 2022, seven nurses were disciplined for accessing medical records they shouldn't have.

A Kelowna woman whose records were accessed said that she was stonewalled by Interior Health when she went to complain.

Last December, BC's Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner put out a report stating that security gaps in the public health computer system put it at risk of abuse.

For Rahimi, along with the two-week suspension, she will also have to complete remedial education.
