40 new COVID-19 cases; 1 death confirmed in Royal Inland Hospital outbreak

Interior Health has confirmed an additional 40 cases of COVID-19 and one death associated with outbreak at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

This brings the total cases to 48 as of today, Jan. 25, after an initial eight cases were confirmed on Friday. Staff members account for 28 cases, the remaining infected people were patients. One elderly patient has died since the outbreak was declared.

Interior Health spokesperson Karl Hardt says the outbreak has not spread from the 6 South surgical unit.

"All precautions are in place to stop further transmission," he says.

All staff who have tested positive, along with patients who were able, are isolating at home.

The remaining patients are being isolated at both the COVID unit and 6 South in the hospital.

Interior Health reminds the public it's safe for the public to go to the hospital for appointments or emergencies.

“I understand the public will be anxious about the news of this outbreak at their hospital," Interior Health medical health officer Dr. Carol Fenton said in a statement. "It is important, however, that people remain calm and know that a highly skilled team is working to quickly contain this outbreak. Please help us support staff and patients by following all public health precautions as you go about your daily activities."
