A Surrey anesthesiologist has been charged with sexual assault.

Dr. Olumuyiwa Bamgbade, 54, was charged with one count of sexual assault after a woman had been sexually assaulted while undergoing a physical exam.

"We are releasing a photograph of Dr. Olumuyiwa Bamgbade in an attempt to further the ongoing investigation," Surrey RCMP Cpl. Vanessa Munn said in a media release issued today, Sept. 28.

"We believe that there are likely people in our community who have additional information and we encourage them to reach out to investigators with our special victims unit."

Dr. Bamgbade, who runs a pain clinic in the 6600-block of 152A Street in Surrey, was charged on Sept. 13.

A woman came forward in July saying she had been sexually assaulted while undergoing a physical exam at the clinic.

Police said the doctor later turned himself in and appeared at the Surrey courthouse where he was released on the following conditions:

He must not be alone in an examination room with a female patient. If he is in an examination room with a female patient, it mush only be in the immediate and continuous physical presence of a female chaperone over 19 years of age. He must display in his office and in each exam room a notice saying all interactions with female patients in a private room and/or examination room will be done in the continuous physical presence of a female chaperone over 19 years of age.

Dr. Bamgbade had been working at the pain clinic since October 2021 and prior to that practiced in Delta, RCMP said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
