VERNON - A proposed amphitheatre at Okanagan College’s Vernon campus has been nixed by the region’s MLA.
Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster announced today, June 1, plans for the amphitheatre, which were introduced by the Okanagan Summer Festival Society, will not be moving ahead.
“It’s a good idea – potentially very good for the community – but it’s the wrong location,” Foster says in a media release. “I feel that an amphitheatre at that location would degrade the quality of life for residents who live near the campus.”
The proposal was met with opposition and concerns around noise, parking and traffic congestion in the neighbouring residential area.
The provincial government owns the land in question and has the final say on development, the government release states.
“I made my feelings – and the feelings of local residents – clear to the Ministry of Advanced Education that this project should not go ahead, and the ministry agreed,” Foster says in the release.
