FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - RCMP in Fort McMurray say they have arrested a man suspected of breaking into a safe in a home that was destroyed by the wildfire that ravaged the city.
Police say charges are pending against a 33-year-old man from Quebec.
The suspect, who is a contractor, has been released from custody and is to appear in Fort McMurray provincial court on Sept. 7.
Police say the safe in a home in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood turned out to be empty.
RCMP are trying to reassure people from the city, noting a full detachment of Mounties have been patrolling the municipality.
"We are committed to remaining on the job for you, as we have throughout this challenging time," said Superintendent Rob McCloy in a release Friday.
"Make no mistake, the RCMP will protect this community from harm."
RCMP have made one other arrest in Fort McMurray since the wildfire roared through the area on May 3.
On May 6 Mounties say they arrested and charged a man with break and enter.
