KAMLOOPS - An alleged thief met his match when he was tackled by witnesses as he attempted to flee the scene of the crime.

Police received a number of 911 calls at about midnight reporting a man smashing the glass at a business located in the 400 block of Victoria St. The man was able to get inside the shop to seach the counter and till area before leaving and heading onto Victoria Street.

Members of the public who witnessed the crime tackled the man to the ground as he fled. Though he managed to get onto his feet again and started running, one of the witnesses continued after him in full pursuit into the parking lot area. The chase ended as the man came face to face with Mounties.

Officers say the man had stolen property in his possession when he was arrested.

"The police are very pleased this person was taken into custody and recognize the above the call action by the members of the public to get him to justice," Const. Bernie Ward stated in a press release. "This event went well but the RCMP wants to point out when people are cornered and fleeing they may be desperate to the point that they use violence to escape with innocent people being hurt."

Ward added that people who want to help police are better off calling 911 and to continue watching for evidence investigators can use to convict criminals.

The investigation continues. The suspect will appear in court today.
