The woman who allegedly spit on a Penticton liquor store employee last November will be facing charges over the encounter this coming fall.
JoAnn Murphy, born 1961, is due in Court on Nov. 8 and 9 to face charges of assault and mischief.
On Nov. 21, 2020 a woman who entered the Skaha Lake Liquor Store without a face covering was asked to wear a mask. Instead of complying with the mask mandate, police allege she spat on the employee and caused damage to the employee's phone.
“Spitting at someone is a concern anytime let alone in the midst of a pandemic,” Sgt. Jason Bayda said at the time.
Police appealed to the public to help identify the woman immediately after the incident, but it took months for police to lay charges. Murphy has since been identified and was charged in March, 2021.

Mask mandates may not be the first public policy Murphy has taken issue with. Before marijuana was legalized in 2018, she was quoted in a local news article as an advocate for cannabis reform, and she is listed as a contact on the website for SensibleBC – an organization that aims to loosen cannabis laws.
Murphy declined comment when reached by phone.
