All of B.C. will get an alert tomorrow

An alert will hit cell phones, radio and TV stations throughout B.C. at 1:55 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 25.

This is part of the biannual test of the national Alert Ready system set up to issue warnings in case of an emergency. A test scheduled for last May was cancelled because of COVID-19.

"This is a TEST of the British Columbia Emergency Alerting System, issued by Emergency Management British Columbia,” the test message will read. “This is ONLY a TEST. If this had been an actual emergency or threat, you would now hear instructions that would assist you to protect you and your family. For further information go to www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca. This is ONLY a TEST, no action is required."

The test is to make sure the system will work if there is an actual emergency and a short survey can be taken afterwards to determine the reach of the system. The survey can be accessed here.

The National Public Alerting System, known as Alert Ready, is a joint effort of the federal and provincial governments with industry partners.

Cell phones have to be connected to a network, be alert compatible and be within the alert range to be part of the test.

To find out if your phone is compatible with the Alert Ready system or for more information, go to www.alertready.ca.
