All flights in and out of Kelowna International Airport have been cancelled today, Aug. 18, due to wildfires in the area.
The McDougal Creek Wildfire has destroyed structures in or near West Kelowna and people have been evacuated from some areas in the northern part of Kelowna due to spot fires there caused by embers drifting across Okanagan Lake.
“Due to the close proximity of the fires, the air space around YLW is closed to allow for the arial firefighting services,” Shayne Dyrdal, acting CEO for the airport told iNFOnews.ca.
While an online posting showed flights were still coming in from Toronto and Montreal this morning, Dyrdal said those will be diverted.
She is working with BC Wildfire Service and Nav Canada but can't say how long the airport will be closed for.
