Alberta man dies after UTV rolls over in South Kootenay area

The RCMP is investigating after a man died when his driver rolled a UTV earlier this week in the South Kootenay area.

Elk Valley RCMP along with B.C. Ambulance and Fernie Search and Rescue responded to a serious rollover involving a UTV in the Newgate area on the west side of Lake Kookanusa, Sept. 4 around 1:50 p.m., according to a press release issued by the RCMP.

An Alberta man was driving the UTV with a passenger, also from Alberta, when the UTV rolled in a body of water. The passenger suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, according to the RCMP. The driver of the UTV did not sustain any injuries.

Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in the incident. The driver has been arrested and released to appear at a later date in Fernie Provincial Court, according to the RCMP.

The Elk Valley RCMP and B.C. Coroners Service are investigating.
