Ajax debate rages on Facebook

Supporters and opponents of the proposed Ajax Mine have moved the debate from the streets to Facebook as an online brawl broke out this week.

KAMLOOPS — The passion over the Ajax Mine debate reached an ignition point over the last week as talk of pipe bombs and blowing up the mine circulated on Facebook.

One poster mentioned they were surprised pipe bombs weren't more common and that KGHM hadn't been targeted while another spoke of how environmental terrorism could take out the Ajax Mine if it gets built.

The Support AJAX MINE Facebook administrators shared these comments and anger quickly boiled on the page. Stop Ajax Mine Facebook page administrators then tried to cool things down by commenting on the post.

“There are crazy people on both sides of the Ajax debate,” they said, adding the posts had been deleted, “because they're clearly ridiculous.”

The comment by Stop Ajax Mine was quickly deleted by administration and then the group was banned from commenting further on the Support AJAX MINE page.

This online war comes on the heels of KGHM Ajax Mining releasing a video about wanting to open up communication and promoting an online forum intended for just Kamloopsians to have those open conversations.

Members of the Stop Ajax Mine group also took to the streets Friday morning for a short rally along the Overlanders Bridge.
