Air tankers battle Chopaka wildfire near Cawston

A new wildfire has broken out in the Similkameen valley.

PENTICTON - Air tankers are battling a new wildfire that started in the Similkameen valley.

The fire broke out this evening east of Chopaka bridge, south of Cawston.

Similkameen resident Dixon Terbasket says the fire has been moving fast since 6 p.m. this evening when he first spotted it.

Air tankers have made multiple drops so far. Terbasket says strong winds are blowing from the northwest.

B.C. Wildfire says the fire is burning 14 kilometres southeast of Cawston and may be visible from Highway 3.

The fire is estimated at 3 ha.

B.C. wildfire service personnel are responding.

We'll have more information as it becomes available.
