KAMLOOPS - There are signs voter turnout in the Kamloops byelection for mayor and two council seats may be low.
Only 1,398 votes were cast on the first two days of advanced polls last week. That's just 2.01 per cent of the city's eligible voters and down from the last time Kamloops residents voted on a municipal matter.
Just over 3,600 advanced ballots were cast during two days of voting ahead of the Performing Arts Centre referendum in 2015. That referendum ended up with just 32 per cent of eligible voters casting a ballot.
Advanced voting for the last general election was even worse than what we are seeing now. Only 1,216 ballots were cast during two days of advanced polls in 2014. About 33 per cent of eligible voters turned out that year.
The byelection is being held to fill the mayor's chair vacated by Peter Milobar when he was elected to the provincial legislature. Two council seats left vacant by Ken Christian and Marg Spina are up for grabs as well. Christian left his post to run for mayor while Spina resigned for health reasons.
Your last chance to take advantage of advance voting is today, Sept. 27, until 8 p.m. at Heritage House, 100 Lorne St.
A list of where to vote on general voting day, Saturday, Sept. 30, can be found here.
