A taste of carnival comes to Vernon's Village Green Hotel

Two venders have set up in the parking lot of the Village Green Hotel, and more are coming.

With every carnival and fair cancelled this summer, the Village Green Hotel Complex is bringing the taste of these outdoor events to Vernon.

The hotel has an area of its parking lot given over to carnival food trailers.

"These guys would normally be getting ready to go to Calgary Stampede, but that doesn't exist anymore," Village Green Hotel Complex director of operations Jamie Lewis told iNFOnews.ca. "That's their livelihood and that's been taken away from them... they're entrepreneurs, they're thinking how can we salvage what we can out of this?"

Lewis said he was approached by the owner of the mini-donut trailer who asked about renting a spot in the parking lot. With the Village Green restaurant and bar currently closed, Lewis jumped at the opportunity.

"So we thought why just have one? Not everybody wants to have mini donuts... let's open up the area... to set up an atmosphere where people can come in and choose what they want to eat," he said.

Currently, a mini donut trailer and a poutine and fries trailer have set up and a perogies trailer is due to open tomorrow. Lewis said it's pretty much an open invitation and he hopes more food trucks will come and set up. With restrictions about parking lot use being relaxed by the city, he may set up chairs and umbrellas, possibly even have some music.

"The more variety you've got the more attractive it becomes," Lewis said. "Set up that atmosphere that gets people out of the house and give them that feeling that they are not going to be able to experience this summer."
