A reward offered for kids biking safely in the North Okanagan

July 14, 2017 - 4:30 PM

VERNON – Kids wearing helmets while biking can look forward to a treat if spotted by the police.

As part of the local RCMP effort to encourage bike safety officer will be pulling over kids who are wearing helmets and give them a Tim Hortons gift card, according to an RCMP media release.

“With Vernon area RCMP officers out on the roads this summer looking to give children these positive tickets for wearing their bike helmets, there's even more reason to make sure you're wearing yours," Sgt. Steve King with the North Okanagan Traffic Service and Integrated Road Safety Unit says in the release.

The program started June 17 with police officers handing out tickets for a free ice cream cone at participating restaurants.

It’s set to wrap at the end of summer vacation on Sept. 6.
