Not only is the film industry in the Okanagan booming, it has become a film centre, according to the film commissioner.

The industry in the Okanagan is expanding exponentially and has become an established centre for both movies and television shows. It’s no longer just a movie location.

“We are not just scouting for films to come here, they are starting here. The concepts are being created here,” Okanagan film commissioner Jon Summerland said in a media release issued today, June 28.

Sixteen films were shot in the Okanagan in the first five months of this year with bigger budget projects scheduled for the second half of 2022.

And looking to 2023, there are two television series in development.

“We have writers, editors, permanent production and head offices here. The infrastructure is established and growing,” he said.

The film commissioner points to Whiskey Jack Transportation and Technologies’ pair of full time production truck teams which means two productions can now be shot at the same time in the region.

Production companies like Enderby Entertainment, Champlain Media and Sol Vision/Kabinet Production Inc. also have permanent offices now.

Another large international company is the process of setting up in the Okanagan, with an announcement expected at a later date.

“No if ands or buts about it anymore, we are not just a film location, we are a film centre, a place to make films," Summerland said.
