A Dog's Life

Dogs live a balanced and happy life under the training of Jessie Taylor and her staff from My Balanced Dog.

It’s said that dog is man’s best friend, but how the two interact can make the difference between best friends and contentious comrades.
Sharing a life with a  dog can be rewarding and fulfilling if that canine is behaving and obedient, however most often than not, behaviors like chewing, barking, lunging, digging etc. come up and that’s where the experts or dog whisperers, as they are often referred to, can be helpful.
“I do relationship-based training, in other words, figuring out what your dog and you are trying to achieve and how both can understand the natural tendencies and use them to better the relationship. Teaching owners dog language so that they can properly communicate what they want their dog to do and not do. Just because a dog is wagging its tail, does not mean it’s happy, unlike popular belief,” explains Jessie Taylor, owner of My Balanced Dog in Kamloops.
All dogs are different, with different personalities, strengths and weaknesses, just like people. The same training tool or technique does not work for every dog. “It is super important to be diverse in training methods and know how each method and tool works properly,” says Taylor, who became the new owner of MBD in 2013, after deciding to buy the 11-year-old business. “It was definitely one of those life changing moments,” Taylor describes the business purchase.
When she took over MBD, it had been a doggy daycare, but now, Taylor focuses only on training through classes, private in-home sessions, seminars, board and train and adventure hikes. In fact, the adventure hikes are so popular amongst owners and their pooches that Taylor is looking to add a second daily hike.
“We go on adventure hikes Monday through Friday with up to 14 dogs, all off leash in the forest. In the morning we go around and pick up dogs while owners are at work, and in the afternoon we bring home tired pups.”
Taylor loves the training side of the dog world and you will always find her eager to talk about a new technique.
“I have amazing clients, they love what we are doing and that we are constantly learning new and better ways. We attend several seminars yearly and take online courses to keep up with the ever changing industry. I currently am not yet trained to rehabilitate aggressive dogs, (dogs that have drawn blood on another dog or human) however, I do train reactive dogs. I am hoping to offer aggression rehabilitation in the near future.”
Taylor offers puppy training, obedience training, rally o, board and train and in-home private sessions.
“Training and obedience are about more than basic commands and modifying frustrating behaviors, they are about fostering a relationship between you and your companion,” explains Taylor.
“I want a dog to love being a dog, and their human to love having a dog.”
