A seven-year-old champion golfer in Kamloops continues to make his community proud one swing at a time.

Everett Quewezance of won the boys 8 and under Maple Junior Golf Tour National Championship in Tsawassen this week.

“They advertise it as Canada’s most played junior gold tour,” proud dad Joe Quewezance said. “He got a medal, a trophy and a really nice pair of sunglasses.”

Both father and son are avid golfers and Tobiano Golf Course members, and Everett is a member of the Maple Leaf Junior Gold Tour in Vancouver.

Earlier this summer Everett competed in two world golf championship events California, the IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships and the Future Champions Golf Callaway World Championships.

“He ended up about the middle of the pack in both,” he said. “He had a really tough day at the Calloway one. Overall it was a great experience, we got to watch the best eight-year-olds in the world. His goal is to make into the top ten next year.”

When his dad asked him what his favourite part of the tournaments were, Everett put making new friends at the top of his list.

Joe said he is proud of how his son carries himself on the course, and that he is representing his Indigenous heritage. The family is originally from Keeseekoose First Nation, Saskatchewan.

“He is quite mature for his age and is always aware of what he is doing and how he is doing it,” he said. “He is very humble and at the end of a tournament he just wants to play with his buddies. It is very cool to see his maturity but he definitely has moments of being a seven-year-old too.”

Everett has been following his dad on the golf course since he was two.

“I’m a pretty good golfer,” said Joe. “It won’t be long before he will legit beat me, from his yardages he has beaten me a couple of times already. I am going to celebrate when he beats me from a tee box, which is probably in two or three years.”

Everett’s most recent win automatically qualifies him for another swing at the Calloway World Championships next summer.

“At the end of the day it is all on him,” Joe said. “He truly loves golf and he loves practising, practise makes perfect. We’ll take some time off at the end of golf season and play hockey.”
