5 things to do in Vernon this weekend

Get your fun on at Lumby Days this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

VERNON – This weekend is a sun shiny kind of weekend in Vernon.

Lumby Days are here again. June 7, 8 and 9 are packed with games, food, live music, silent auction, demonstrations, vendors and of course amusement rides. Friday runs from 3 to 7 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., with the parade kicking off at 11 a.m. and Sunday’s fun is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Be sure to check out the sword fighting demonstrations, blacksmith demos, car show and even thrash wrestling. The beverage gardens are open from 4 to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

For those who love everything handmade, or made from and for the heart and soul, Creative Chaos is the place to find it all. The largest summer craft show in Western Canada will see three buildings full of crafters from all over. The Recreation Centre, Curling Club and Priest Valley Arena will be packed June 7, 8 and 9.

The popular craft fair began in 1971 as a two day exhibition of porcelain and ceramics. It has since grown to the massive display and sale of artwork, crafts and food.

Creative Chaos is a nonprofit organization run by volunteers. Admission is by a food bank donation. A free shuttle bus, new this year, will pick up at Kal Tire Place in the upper parking lot off 48th Ave. and drop off at the entrance to the Curling Club. The 6th Annual Vernon Silver Star Rotary Ride rolls out Sunday, June 9 from Kin Beach.

This charity ride is limited to 200 participants and is a tour style non-competitive event that starts in Vernon. Riders can choose from four different route distances; 35 km (new for 2019), 64 km, 95 km or 118 km, depending on your ability and fitness level.

Registration is $85 and includes a barbecue at the end of the day. Registration is at 6:30 a.m. for the 64, 95 and 118 km rides and 8 a.m. for the 35 km ride.

Silver Star Rotary has chosen Okanagan based BrainTrust Canada as the charity of choice for this year’s ride.  BrainTrust provides support to those affected by brain injury to maximize their potential and independence; and also works to reduce preventable brain injuries for youth, who are at the greatest risk for injury. The proceeds from this year’s ride will go toward providing providing bike helmets for children and youth in the Vernon area who are unable to afford them.

Enjoy a taste of farm life in Armstrong Saturday, June 8.

Breakfast on the Farm gets cracking at 8 a.m. and runs until 11 a.m. at 1151 Thomas-Hayes Rd. in Spallumcheen.
