Almost $40,000 has been raised to support a Vernon woman who will be wheelchair-bound following a serious accident.

Angela Sparrow of Vernon started an online fundraiser for her friend Melinda Warnock, a long-time Purolator delivery driver in Vernon, yesterday, Dec. 22, and in one day it raised $36,000.

Warnock was hit by a vehicle, Dec. 16, while delivering parcels and has been recovering in Kelowna General Hospital since the accident. The funds will be used to support her in her recovery, Sparrow said.

“She’s like a sister to me and a lot of other gals and she’s so outgoing in this community with her Purolator job, which she’s been doing for 27 years,” she said.

“Melinda is one of the strongest women I know, and I know she will pull through this,” she said, adding the support from the community has been monumental.

Sparrow initially started the fundraiser with a goal of $5,000 in mind to support Warnock’s daughter who had to take a leave of absence from work to support her mother, but different companies and people in Vernon reached out to her.

“I’ve lived in Vernon since 1989… seeing this, I have no words. It’s just absolutely overwhelming and mind blowing,” Sparrow said.

If you wish to make a donation, you can find the online fundraiser here.
