The COVID-19 pandemic just won’t go away as the number of new cases continues to climb.

With a record 234 new cases in the Interior Health region in the last 24 hours, that’s well over half of the 402 new cases in B.C. as a whole.

"Our province is currently facing a wave of cases in the unvaccinated," Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said in a news release issued today, Aug. 5. “I am grateful to all the British Columbians who have rolled up their sleeves to get their COVID-19 vaccine. This simple act brings us one step closer to putting the pandemic behind us."

The 234 Interior Health cases eclipses the previous record high of 171 new daily case. Those were reported yesterday.

After a big push on vaccinations yesterday, there are now 81.7 per cent of British Columbians over the age of 12 who have been vaccinated, 68.4 per cent of whom have had two doses.

There are now 2,066 active cases of COVID-19, with 1,121 of those in the Interior Health region.

There were 82 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 41 in Vancouver Coastal, 25 on Vancouver Island and 20 in the Northern Health region.

There have been no new deaths in the last 24 hours.
