4 more COVID-19 deaths in Interior Health region

Four more people died from COVID in the Interior Health region along with seven other British Columbians over the weekend.

There were 189 new COVID cases in the region over the weekend and 970 in B.C. as a whole, according to a Government of B.C. news release issued today, Nov. 19 There were 389 new cases in B.C. on Saturday, 309 Sunday and 272 in the last 24 hours.

Over the weekend, there were 306 new cases in the Fraser Health region, 238 on Vancouver Island, 134 in Northern Health and 103 in Vancouver Coastal.

There are currently 2,882 active cases in B.C. with 303 people in hospital, 115 of whom are in intensive care.

The vaccination rate for those over the age of 12 with at least one dose crept up to 91.1% while 87.8% have two doses.

Children aged five to 11 can now get a pediatric COVID vaccine.

“This vaccine is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19 in children, which means less disruption to school and the activities children and their families enjoy," Interior Health interim chief medical health officer Dr. Sue Pollock said in a media release.

You can register children at the Get Vaccinated B.C. website here or by calling 1-833-838-2323. Children are eligible for registration on or after their fifth birthday.

Parents and guardians will get a text or email when it is time to book an appointment.

“Immunizing children brings additional protection to everyone in your family,” pediatrician Dr. Shannon Wires said in the release.

“The pediatric COVID-19 vaccine has gone through a rigorous review and approval process. It provides excellent protection and I recommend parents get their children vaccinated as soon as possible.”
