37 police files on record for Kelowna problem house

The scene of a Rutland home on Nickel Road, April 30, 2022.

Since November, police officers have responded 37 times for various reasons to a problem property on Nickel Road in Kelowna.

On Thursday, Aug. 11, RCMP officers assisted city bylaw officers to conduct an inspection at the property in the 200 block of Nickel Road and recovered a stolen electric bike worth $5,000, said media relations officer Const. Mike Della-Paolera, of the Kelowna detachment.

Since November 2021, 37 files have been created. These files could range from criminal behaviour to assisting B.C. Ambulance and bylaw officers with calls, he said.

In April, a man was sent to the hospital after he was allegedly assaulted by multiple people at the home.

“This is property of concern because there is a lot of criminal activity in and around the property, there’s been a lot of complaints. The neighbourhood is complaining,” he said.

The owner of the property is from the Lower Mainland and “has basically lost control of this property,” he said, adding the owner is working with the city and trying to go through the Residential Tenancy Branch to remove the occupants.

“All we can do is attend when criminal activity is reported to us,” he said.

Bylaw services manager Kevin Mead said bylaw services is involved with a compliance team in conjunction with other city services and RCMP regarding the property.

“It is a long-standing file,” Mead said. They’ve experienced zoning issues and property compliance challenges with the property.

He didn’t have the exact number of bylaw complaints on file but said neighbours have been complaining often.
