15-year-old Kamloops hiker dies at waterfall near Revelstoke

A 15-year-old girl from Kamloops was found dead near Revelstoke after she lost her footing while hiking.

The unidentified girl slipped and fell into the Akolkolex Falls around 6 p.m. Sunday, July 16, according to an RCMP news release.

Her stepfather dove into the falls and attempted to rescue her, but witnesses didn't see either of them resurface.

BC Ambulance, firefighters and a search and rescue crew responded to the area and found the step-father, who was injured and taken to hospital.

"Tragically on July 17, the female was located deceased by RCMP and Search and Rescue personnel," RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy said in the news release.

The BC Coroners Service has taken over the investigation.
